Can you replace countertops without replacing cabinets?

Yes, you can often replace kitchen countertops while keeping the cabinets you love. The cabinet boxes need to be sound, secure and level, with the right support for the new material. Your sink, backsplash and appliances also need to fit the plan. If the layout already works, new countertops can change the character of the room without starting the whole kitchen again.

At Granite Plus, we start with the kitchen in front of us: what you want to keep, what you want to change and how the new stone will bring them together.

When does keeping the cabinets make sense?

Start with two questions. Do you still like the way the kitchen works? And are the cabinet boxes in good condition?

If both answers are yes, the countertops can become the main design decision. A quiet surface can calm a busy room. A veined island can give familiar cabinetry a new focal point. Marble brings natural depth; quartz, Eclos and Dekton offer their own patterns and finishes. The right choice belongs beside your existing cabinets, not only in an inspiration photo.

Cabinet doors are only part of the picture. The base beneath the countertop matters too. Loose cabinets, swelling near the sink or an uneven run need attention before new stone is measured and made.

What needs to be checked before choosing the stone?

A countertop-only project still deserves a complete plan. These details affect the result:

1. Are the cabinets ready for new countertops?

The cabinet boxes need to be secure and level, with support suited to the new countertop. We can handle minor cabinet repairs, leveling and support work that does not require structural changes. If more is needed, we can help you consider the next step before the stone is made.

2. Can you change the sink and faucet too?

A new countertop is a chance to choose the sink you really want. Confirm that it fits the sink base, with room for the faucet and plumbing below. Choose the actual models before the final template so the openings are made for the right products.

3. Can you replace an outdated tile backsplash?

Yes. We offer full-height backsplash options to replace an outdated tile backsplash. Continuing the countertop material up the wall can give the kitchen a more complete, composed look. If you prefer to keep the tile, plan the joint with the new countertop early: removal and a change in thickness can affect the fit.

4. Will the appliances and seating still fit?

Check cooktop openings, appliance clearances and any proposed seating overhang. If you want a deeper island or a different sink location, discuss it before treating the project as a simple replacement.

5. Who handles the plumbing and electrical work?

We can disconnect and reconnect plumbing fixtures, handle electrical connections and complete minor electrical improvements. Discuss these details with us at the start so they are part of your countertop plan, rather than separate questions to solve at the end.

How do you choose a color for cabinets that are staying?

Bring the room into the decision. Consider the cabinet color, flooring, hardware and light together. Compare a real sample beside the cabinets in daylight and under the lights you use in the evening.

You can start with our AI visualizer. Upload a photo of your kitchen and try colors from the NOVAMESA Collection on your own countertops. It is a useful way to narrow the direction before we bring real samples to your home.

For example, Eclos Landr pairs a light background with soft golden veining. It can bring movement to a kitchen without making every other finish compete. The sample and your room's lighting will help you decide whether that warmth is right for you.

What does the replacement process look like?

The work follows a clear order, even when the cabinets stay:

  1. Review the existing kitchen and agree on the design and scope.
  2. Confirm the material, sink, faucet, edge and backsplash plan.
  3. Remove the existing countertops at the agreed stage of the project.
  4. Complete any cabinet repairs, leveling or support work needed before final measurement. We can handle this work when it is minor and does not require a structural modification.
  5. Make the final template, then fabricate and install the countertops.
  6. Complete the planned plumbing and electrical connections, backsplash work and touch-ups.

We will plan removal and the work that follows around your project. Your scope should cover the countertop work, any minor cabinet adjustments, plumbing and electrical connections, and the backsplash, so you know what is included from the start.

Can you keep using the kitchen while you wait?

If timing is a concern, ask about our temporary countertop service. We can quickly make plywood decking and reinstall plumbing so you still have a functional kitchen while you wait for your new countertops.

When is a larger kitchen remodel the better choice?

If the cabinets have serious damage, or the layout no longer suits the way you cook and gather, plan those changes before the countertops. If new stone inspires a larger project, let us introduce you to one of our preferred cabinet makers. You can explore the whole kitchen without leaving the countertop decision behind.
